WHAT IS FOSTERING?
Fostering is agreeing to take a homeless animal into your home, and give them the care, love and attention that they need until they are able to be adopted into a family of their own.
WHAT DO FOSTERS DO?
Fosters are responsible for preparing every animal that comes through their home for adoptions. Every year we take in hundreds of cats and kittens during "kitten season," which begins in early spring and ends in late fall.

Cat and Kitten fostering mostly fits into a few easy categories:
- Bottle Feeders
- These kittens are in need of round the clock care, with feedings every 2-4 hours depending on age. Watching a kitten go from depending on you for everything, to complete independence can be a very rewarding experience.
- Young Kittens
- Kitten litters can be anywhere from one single kitten to as many as 9 or 10 kittens. Sometimes they are brought to us without their mom. Although they are old enough to begin to live without her, they still need our care (especially since kittens tend to be quite messy)
- Cat Families
- The most wonderful thing to watch. A mother cat, birthing her young, and then caring for them until they are old enough to be on their own. And then helping this mother get spayed so she never has to go through it again.
- Recovering, Sick or Injured Cats
WHY SHOULD I FOSTER A CAT?
Fostering a cat is a rewarding experience. You are giving a cat or kitten a temporary home so that they can find their permanent home. All it takes is a safe space, some time and love, and a willingness to learn. Every Dog's Dream provides all of the necessary materials for fostering, and arranges all necessary medical visits for your foster. All you have to do is keep them safe, happy and loved.
FAQ
Helpful Information
DO I NEED TO KEEP FOSTER ANIMALS SEPARATE FROM MY PETS?
We require that all fostered animals are kept separate until they have been fully vetted. It is best to start with your fosters in a bathroom, bedroom, or even a crate to ensure that until a time when they have been properly vaccinated, they are kept safe and separate. |
I LOVE THE IDEA OF BEING A FOSTER PARENT, BUT HOW CAN I POSSIBLY BRING THEM BACK FOR ADOPTION?
We know it can be difficult, but you have become a crucial part in helping homeless animals get the forever families they deserve. When you help one kitten, and then find it a home, there will always be another in need of your help. But don't worry, we allow "Foster Failure!" |
WHAT IF A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER WANTS TO ADOPT MY FOSTER ANIMAL?
We thank you for helping find homes for your foster animals? However, we require that every adopter submit an application to be considered for adoption. If they are approved, they can adopt directly from you! |
WHAT IF I WANT TO ADOPT THE ANIMAL I'M FOSTERING?
This is the "Foster Failure" thing I mentioned before! We understand this can happen when you are fostering, and we would love for you to adopt your foster! Just be sure to let us know as soon as you know so that we can make sure no applications are submitted for your foster! Remember that fosters are crucial in saving lives, so we ask you to consider how adopting your foster may affect your ability to continue fostering other animals in the future. |
